CHAdeMO in 2026: Is It Still Worth It?
CHAdeMO was an early DC fast-charging standard. Here's where it stands today, which cars still use it, and what owners should know.
CHAdeMO was one of the first DC fast-charging standards, but its role has shrunk dramatically in North America. If you own a car that uses it — most famously the Nissan LEAF — here's what you need to know.
A quick history
CHAdeMO emerged from Japan as an early fast-charging standard and powered the first wave of mass-market EVs. For years it was the way a Nissan LEAF or early Mitsubishi EV fast charged. But the industry largely consolidated around CCS and, more recently, NACS.
Where CHAdeMO stands today
- Declining infrastructure. Many networks have stopped installing new CHAdeMO connectors, and some older units are being retired or not repaired.
- Few new vehicles. Modern EVs almost universally ship with CCS or NACS, not CHAdeMO.
- Still usable. Plenty of CHAdeMO connectors remain in service, so existing owners can still fast charge — it just takes more planning.
If you own a CHAdeMO car
You can absolutely keep driving and charging, but adjust your expectations:
- Check availability carefully. CHAdeMO stalls are less common and sometimes the lone unit at a site. Verify it's working before you rely on it.
- Lean on Level 2. For daily driving, your J1772 AC charging is unaffected and as available as ever — home and destination charging remain easy.
- Plan road trips around CHAdeMO sites. Map your fast-charging stops in advance and always have a backup, since coverage is thinner.
- Consider adapters cautiously. CHAdeMO adapter options are limited; research what's compatible and safe for your specific vehicle.
Is it "worth it"?
For a current owner, your car still works fine — especially if most of your charging is at home on Level 2. The main friction is road-trip fast charging, where you'll plan more and verify more. If you're buying a used EV, factor the connector into your decision: a CHAdeMO car may be a great value for local driving but less convenient for frequent long trips.
Make the most of what's available
Because CHAdeMO stalls are scarcer, finding an available, working one matters even more. Set your connector in ChargeScout so only CHAdeMO-compatible stations rank for you, and check reliability scores and reviews before committing to a stop.
