Free EV Charging: Where to Find It and the Catch

Free EV charging exists — at stores, workplaces, hotels, and more. Here's where to find it and the trade-offs to watch for.

Free charging sounds too good to be true, but it's surprisingly common — especially for Level 2. Knowing where to look (and the catches) can shave real money off your charging costs.

Where free charging hides

  • Retail and grocery stores offering charging to attract shoppers.
  • Hotels and resorts as a guest amenity (see destination charging).
  • Workplaces as an employee perk (see workplace charging).
  • Municipal lots, libraries, and parks in some cities.
  • Car dealerships and certain attractions.
  • Promotional credits some automakers include with a new EV.

Most free charging is Level 2, perfect for topping up while you're parked anyway. Free DC fast charging is rarer and usually promotional.

The catches

Free isn't always frictionless:

  1. It's slower. Free chargers are usually Level 2, so they're for "while you're here," not quick fills.
  2. It can be crowded. Free stalls attract demand, so availability is less predictable.
  3. There may be strings attached. "Free for customers/guests," validation required, or time limits.
  4. Idle fees or tow risk. Even free stalls may penalize cars that overstay or aren't actually charging.

How to use it wisely

  • Stack it with errands. Free Level 2 is ideal while you shop, dine, or work.
  • Don't go far out of your way. The savings on a Level 2 session are modest; a long detour can cost more in time and energy than you save.
  • Mind etiquette. Free, popular stalls especially deserve prompt turnover — charge, then move.
  • Verify access before relying on it ("customers only" can mean a purchase is required).

Worth it — within reason

Free charging is a nice bonus, not a strategy to build your whole routine around. Use it when it's convenient and on your way, and rely on planned home and public charging for the bulk of your needs.

Find it near you

Spotting free and well-priced stations among the options is exactly the kind of comparison ChargeScout makes easy — pricing shows on every listing and factors into the ranking, so a free or cheap charger rises when speed and availability are comparable.
