J1772 Explained: The Level 2 Charging Standard

J1772 is the universal AC charging connector in North America. Learn what it does, how fast it charges, and why even Tesla owners use it.

Of all the EV connectors, J1772 is the one nearly every driver uses regularly — even if they've never said its name. It's the backbone of everyday AC charging in North America.

What J1772 is

J1772 (officially SAE J1772, nicknamed the "J-plug") is the standard connector for AC charging — both Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V). If you charge at home, work, a hotel, or a shopping center on a non-DC charger, you're almost certainly using J1772.

  • Speed: up to roughly 19 kW on Level 2, though most home and public Level 2 units deliver 7–11 kW.
  • Range added: typically 12–40 miles per hour of charging.

Who uses it

  • Most non-Tesla EVs have a J1772 port for AC charging (and a CCS port that incorporates J1772 for DC fast charging).
  • Tesla vehicles use a small J1772 adapter to plug into these ubiquitous Level 2 stations.

In other words, J1772 is the common ground of AC charging — practically every EV can use it, directly or with an adapter.

Why it matters for daily life

DC fast charging gets the headlines, but most charging happens on J1772 Level 2 while your car is parked anyway — overnight at home, during the workday, or while you shop. It's slower than DC fast charging, but for "top up while parked" it's perfect and far cheaper.

J1772 vs the DC standards

Don't confuse J1772 with CCS or NACS:

So a non-Tesla EV typically has one physical port that handles J1772 AC and CCS DC; a Tesla uses NACS plus a J1772 adapter for AC.

The takeaway

J1772 is the quiet workhorse of EV charging — universal, reliable, and everywhere you park. When you're looking for a place to top up while you run errands or stay overnight, filter for Level 2 and you'll find J1772 stations all around you.
