Charging an EV on a Long Highway Trip: A Real Example

Walk through a realistic long-distance EV drive — from planning stops to charging to 80% — so you know exactly what a road trip feels like.

The best way to demystify EV road trips is to walk through one. Let's plan a realistic 500-mile drive in an EV with about 280 miles of rated range, and see exactly how charging fits in.

The setup

  • Car: ~280 miles rated range, peaks around 180 kW DC fast charging.
  • Trip: 500 miles, mostly highway at 70 mph.
  • Plan for ~75% of rated range on the highway, so figure ~210 usable miles per "tank."

Before leaving

The night before, charge to 100% (shortly before departure is ideal for battery health). Map the route and identify fast chargers near food and restrooms at sensible intervals. Always note a backup station for each stop.

Leg 1: 0–190 miles

Leave at 100%. Drive ~190 miles and arrive at the first fast charger around 20%. This is the fast part of the charging curve, so you'll see strong charging speeds.

  • Charge 20% → 80% (~25–30 minutes) while you grab lunch.
  • Back on the road with ~225 miles of usable range.

Leg 2: 190–390 miles

Drive ~200 miles, arriving at the second charger around 15–20%.

  • Charge to ~75–80% (~25 minutes) — a coffee-and-stretch break.
  • Plenty of range to finish.

Leg 3: 390–500 miles

Drive the final ~110 miles and arrive at your destination with a comfortable buffer (~25–30%). If your destination has Level 2 charging (a hotel, for example), plug in overnight and start the next day full. See hotel and destination charging.

The rhythm

Two charging stops, each ~25–30 minutes, both overlapping with meals or breaks you'd take anyway. Total "extra" time spent purely charging: close to zero, since you're eating and stretching during the sessions.

What makes it smooth

  • Arrive low, leave ~80% to stay in the fast part of the curve.
  • Stops near amenities so charging time isn't wasted time.
  • A backup for every stop in case one is busy or down.

That's the whole trick. Plug the destination and your starting charge into ChargeScout and it maps stops like these for you, complete with fast chargers along the route you can save. For the mindset, read how to beat range anxiety.
