What to Do When a Charger Won't Start

A charger that won't start is frustrating but usually fixable. Work through this troubleshooting checklist to get charging — or move on fast.

You're plugged in, but nothing's happening. Before you panic or assume the station is dead, run through this checklist — most failed starts have a quick fix.

Step 1: Reseat the connector

The most common culprit is a poor connection. Unplug fully and plug back in firmly until it clicks/seats completely. A loose or partial connection often prevents the session from starting.

Step 2: Check the screen and your app

  • Look for an error message on the station screen — it often tells you exactly what's wrong.
  • If you started via an app, confirm the session actually initiated and that you selected the correct stall number.
  • Make sure your payment method is valid and the app didn't time out.

Step 3: Confirm your car is ready

  • Is the car awake and unlocked? Some EVs need to be unlocked to authorize charging.
  • Is there a charge limit set that's already reached, or a scheduled-charging setting blocking it?
  • Try locking/unlocking the car or waking it via its app.

Step 4: Try another stall

If one stall won't cooperate, move to another at the same site. Individual connectors fail while others work fine — this is exactly why multi-stall sites are safer. A different stall is often the fastest fix.

Step 5: Restart the session

  • Stop the session in the app, unplug, wait a moment, and start fresh.
  • Power-cycle is the charging world's "turn it off and on again," and it works more often than you'd expect.

Step 6: Contact network support

Most stations have a support phone number on the unit. Staff can sometimes remotely reset a stall or start a session for you. Have the station ID (printed on the unit) ready.

Step 7: Move on and report it

If it's truly down, don't burn your whole afternoon. Head to your backup station — you did note one, right? Then leave a review or check-in so the next driver knows. Your report feeds the reliability score that helps everyone (see how reliability scores work).

Prevent it next time

Many failed starts are avoidable by picking dependable stations to begin with. Check reliability scores and recent reviews before you commit, and favor multi-stall sites. ChargeScout surfaces that information up front and keeps a ranked list of alternatives nearby, so a stubborn stall is a minor detour, not a ruined trip. See also avoiding broken or ICE'd stations.
